We Are Different…Here’s Why!
Our Custom Green Homes vs.
Other Builders’ Custom Homes
The word “Custom” is being degraded by other builders who don’t have an inkling what custom truly is. The truth is, these homes are speculative or “spec homes”. That means it has to appeal to the masses who are in the market to buy a home.
The heading in an advertisement for a newly constructed community read,
“Still Time to Customize”!
We found that to mean the potential buyer was allowed to pick:
- The carpet color of a product already selected at deep discounts from the supplier
- One of four different hardwood floor colors and the choice between a 3″ or 4 1/2 ” plank
- One of five standard builder colors of the granite countertops – one of them being “absolute black”
- A handful of other fixtures that had been selected due to deep discounts from the supplier
We wouldn’t call that customization!
We would ask that you start a file of web pages and pictures and clippings of all the stuff you like. We then source them and price them and see what fits in your budget and what other options we can offer you based on your tastes we have observed. You are involved in the whole design process. Or very little if you wish!
The word “Green” is also being degraded by builders who have even less of an inkling of what Green is.
For example: A Bamboo Floor is not green if it was shipped from China on a coal-burning barge.
Build it Green tries to source ALL our materials and MOST of your selections from local sources. Although we can’t do this for 100% of the selections, our efforts allow us to compromise on those must haves for the clients that unfortunately have to be shipped across country. We’re okay with that!!
Is the last builder you talked to…Behind the Times?
If the builder or contractor cannot discuss the latest building products and the latest technology behind the why’s, it could be due to a number of reasons:
- Maybe unwilling to invest the time and money necessary to learn the newest techniques
- Maybe they don’t stay in touch with the latest lifestyle trends
- Maybe they are adverse to change or don’t like or understand technology
These technology-adverse builders tend to lag behind when it comes to whole house automation and structured wiring – making them also slow (if ever) in adopting new construction techniques and new building materials. Do you want to chance ending up with a home built to sub-par standards due to his lack of understanding technologies or new methods?
